After much speculation it’s been confirmed by the BBC, in an extremely brief and throughly underwhelming teaser trailer, that Series 8 of the revived Doctor Who will debut in August 2014, possibly on the Bank Holiday Saturday 23 August. And for the first time since Matt Smith’s debut series in 2010 the series will run uninterrupted, none of the split-season nonsense that plagued Series 6 and 7.
All signs point to Peter Capaldi’s first year as the Twelfth Doctor containing 12 episodes with an additional one forming the 2014 Christmas Special. Down from the standard 13 episodes plus Christmas Special that had existed since the series returned in 2005.
Series 8 is looking increasingly likely to be a make-or-break period for Doctor Who as showrunner Steven Moffat continues to court justified controversy for his misogynistic attitudes and increasingly lacklustre storytelling.
